Low-frequency variability of the Pacific Subtropical Cells as reproduced by coupled models and ocean reanalyses

چکیده

Abstract Low-frequency variability of the Pacific Subtropical Cells (STCs) is investigated using outputs from several models included in two latest phases Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP), CMIP5 and CMIP6, as well ocean reanalysis products. Our analysis focuses on historical simulations an idealised future scenario integration. Mass heat transport diagnostics are employed to assess how coupled reanalyses reproduce STCs total interior convergence at equator their relationship with equatorial sea surface temperature (SST). Trends mass also evaluated, order study expected change a warming climate. A large spread obtained across simulated transports, confirming that do not agree reproducing observed dynamics, very limited improvement by CMIP6 models. Compared products, tend underestimate convergence, less efficient propagating signal generated subtropical wind stress towards equator. Also, exhibit larger variability, these products better STCs-SST relationship. Future suggest weakening (strengthening) North (South) cell under warmer conditions, general agreement Equatorward trends confirm this for components, but they western boundary component.

Wind-Driven Variability of the Subtropical North Pacific Ocean

The Argo array provides a unique dataset to explore variability of the subsurface ocean interior. This study considers the subtropical North Pacific Ocean during the period from 2004 to 2011, when Argo coverage has been relatively complete in time and space. Two distinct patterns of Argo dynamic height transport function (d DH) are observed: in 2004/05, the gyre is stronger, and in 2008/09 it i...

Ocean noise in the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean.

Ocean ambient noise is well studied in the North Pacific and North Atlantic but is poorly described for most of the worlds' oceans. Calibrated passive acoustic recordings were collected during 2009-2010 at seven locations in the central and western tropical and subtropical Pacific. Monthly and hourly mean power spectra (15-1000 Hz) were calculated in addition to their skewness, kurtosis, and pe...

Low frequency variability of Southern Ocean jets

[1] Both observations and high resolution numerical models show that the Southern Ocean circumpolar flow is concentrated in a large number (approximately 8 to 12) of narrow filamentary jets. It is shown here that coherent jets exhibit a range of low frequency variability, on timescales of months to years, that can lead to displacement and to intermittent formation and dissipation of jets. Using...

Hybrid coupled models of the tropical Pacific: I interannual variability

Two hybrid coupled models (HCMs), an intermediate complexity dynamical ocean model coupled to either a nonlinear neural network atmosphere (NHCM) or a linear regression atmosphere (LHCM), have been developed for the tropical Pacific. The ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) characteristics of the two coupled models were investigated. The results show that the NHCM can produce more realistic ENSO...

Variability of the Indo-Pacific Ocean exchanges

The ECCO–GODAE global estimate of the ocean circulation 1992–2007 is analyzed in the region of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), including the Southern Ocean flow south of Australia. General characteristics are an intense month-to-month noise, only weak trends, and an important annual cycle (which is not the focus of attention). Apart from the details of the unresolved flows within the various ...
